Barnet Council offers a range of commercial services through Trading Standards. These services are available to businesses and organisations and are charged in line with statutory or discretionary powers.

Weights and measures

We offer verification or calibration services for weights and measures equipment to make sure compliance with legal standards. This service:

  • costs £109 per officer hour
  • follows Section 11 of The Weights and Measure Act 1985 legislation
  • is charged on a statutory discretionary basis

Safety at sports grounds

We issue and amend safety certificates for designated and regulated stands. Fees vary depending on the type of stand, its capacity and the type of application.

For designated stands:

  • the safety certificate application fee is £3,802.85
  • the service follows Safety at Sports Ground Act 1975 and Safety of Sports Grounds Regulations 1987
  • the fee is charged on a statutory cost recovery basis

Regulated Stand (based on capacity):

  • 500–999 capacity: £1,025.03
  • 1,000–4,999 capacity: £1,854.08
  • 5,000–9,999 capacity: £3,449.00
  • this service follows Fire Safety and Places of Sport Act 1987 legislation
  • the fees are charged on a statutory cost recovery basis

Additional applications

We handle extra applications related to safety certificates for sports grounds

  • The fee to transfer a certificate or regulated stand is £1,274.96
  • the fee to replace or cancel is £61.66
  • these services are charged on a statutory cost recovery basis.

Scrap metal licence support

We offer help with scrap metal licence applications:

  • the checking service costs £45.14 per application
  • the assisted service costs £125.51 per application
  • this service is provided under Section 93 of the Local Government Act 2003 and is charged on a discretionary basis.

Consultancy services

We provide specialist Trading Standards advice and consultancy to businesses. This service:

  • costs up to £136.52 per hour
  • is provided under the Local Government Act 2003 and Localism Act 2011
  • is charged on a discretionary basis

Primary Authority services

We offer Primary Authority partnerships for Trading Standards work. This service:

  • costs up to £68.26 per hour
  • follows the Regulatory Enforcement and Sanctions Act 2008 and is charged at statutory discretionary basis
