Rain gardens are being installed across Barnet to help reduce the risk of localised flooding and reduce the impact excess water has on roads and pavements. The sustainable water drainage systems feature specially selected plants, shrubs, and other greenery. They are designed to absorb rainwater to help stop sewer systems becoming overwhelmed – one of the main causes of localised flooding.

Councillor Tony Vourou has become the 60th Mayor of Barnet, after being officially sworn in during the Annual Council Meeting held on Tuesday 21 May at Hendon Town Hall. Councillor Vourou takes over from the borough’s previous Mayor, Councillor Nagus Narenthira. The Mayoress will be his wife, Mrs Caroline Vourou. Councillor Vourou has chosen Macmillan Cancer Support and Age UK Barnet as his charities, and fundraising for cardiac equipment at Barnet General Hospital, during his Mayoral term.

The Leader of Barnet Council has announced changes to Cabinet portfolios to place greater emphasis on reducing poverty and boosting the local economy. Revisions to the responsibilities held by the team of top decision-makers were confirmed during a meeting of the Annual Council on Tuesday (21 May).

General Election 2024 results The count for the Parliamentary constituencies of Chipping Barnet, Finchley & Golders Green and Hendon in the 2024 General Election took place at the RAF Museum, Colindale, on Thursday 4 July and the following results have been declared: Dan Tomlinson of the Labour Party has been elected as the Member of Parliament for the Chipping Barnet constituency. Sarah Sackman of the Labour Party has been elected as the Member of Parliament for the Finchley & Golders Green constituency.

Barnet Council is asking residents for their ideas and suggestions about improved ways to help people walk, cycle and wheel more easily around Colindale. An online questionnaire, which launches today, alongside community drop-by and briefing sessions aim to understand what local people think about the proposals.
Barnet Council’s NET ZERO challenge winners were announced at a special event to mark the end of Barnet Climate Action Month held at the RAF Museum in Hendon last night, Monday 15 July. The collaborative initiative held by Middlesex University and the council, and sponsored by Hammersons, Microsoft and Natwest, invited those who, live, work or study in the Borough to design and then vote for the best carbon-reducing sustainability project, with the top three projects winning a share of £10,000 in prize money.
