Barnet marks Holocaust Memorial Day

The annual ceremony was held on Sunday 29 January in the Rickett Quadrangle at Middlesex University’s campus in The Burroughs, Hendon. The theme of this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day was ‘how can life go on’? The theme asks people to think about what happens after genocide, and to consider our own responsibilities in the wake of such a crime.
Barnet launches social work academy

The Barnet Children Practice Academy (BCPA) will provide a clearly structured way for the council’s social workers and other family services staff to develop with additional training - helping to foster best practice, and ensure the best possible outcomes for the families they support. The new academy will provide ongoing training and mentoring to social workers and staff of all levels.
Barnet residents urged to register to vote

Residents have until the 18 April to make sure that they have their say in the important elections being held in the borough on 5 May. The Underhill Ward by-election, Mayor of London, Barnet and Camden Constituency London Assembly Member and London-wide Assembly Member elections will all take place on 5 May with all the results expected to be declared on 6 May once the counts have been completed.

A space for the Mill Hill community to celebrate

The new area, which was used for the Mill Hill Christmas Market and Lights Switch-On in late November, will benefit the entire community as a central meeting place with seating and planting facilities that can be flexibly moved to support market and event days, as well as being available for every day use. Barnet Council, in conjunction with Mill Hill Neighbourhood Forum and Groundwork (delivering work on behalf of TESCO Supermarkets), provided funding to create the space on Brockenhurst Gardens where it meets the Broadway.
Eighth successful housing prosecution welcomed

The latest successful prosecution by Barnet Council brings the total number of cases of landlords prosecuted for failing to licence or manage their properties over the last 18 months to eight, with more than £200,000 fines issued. Rent totalling more than £20,000 has also been reclaimed from landlords by their tenants in two of the cases through Rent Repayment Orders.
The group, which has been meeting regularly throughout the year as part of the Barnet Young Person’s Development Group, explained where the name came from as well as giving an exciting overview of the fantastic facilities that will be on offer. Unitas, the Latin word for unity, is featured on Barnet’s coat of arms which was the where the idea for it to be the name of the Youth Zone was born.
New primary officially opens its doors

The brand new multi-million pound school will cater for 420 pupils when it reaches full capacity and the London Academy, which is part of the AIM Academies Trust, now provides an all-through education for pupils from the age of four through to 18. The school follows extensive work over the last three years involving the council, London Academy and the Department for Education. Barnet Council contributed more than £6million to the overall £11million cost of the new school.
Views sought on proposed Youth Zone

The charity is working alongside the London Borough of Barnet to develop a brand new £6 million Youth Zone in Montrose Park, Burnt Oak which will open in 2018. The Youth Zone will be named Unitas after a borough-wide vote in which 2,000 young people took part. Over the next few weeks, prior to the submission of a planning application to the London Borough of Barnet, OnSide will be consulting on its plans with interested groups and the local community.
Making the announcement on Clean Air Day, and supported by the Taking Care of our Neighbourhoods campaign, the council will aim to inform residents about simple things they can do to improve air quality, such as switching off vehicle engines when stationery and, where possible, consider walking and cycling to school or work.
