Discover the new Pressreader app

The ‘Pressreader’ app is available to all registered library users and allows people to use a computer, tablet or smart phone to access publications from 100 countries and in 60 different languages free of charge. All residents need to log into the new app is their Barnet library card number. Among its 7,000 publications are UK newspapers including The Guardian, Daily Mail, Independent and the Daily Telegraph.
Council delivers Easter treats for young patients

Barnet Council has delivered nearly 200 Easter treats to children in hospitals across the borough. The council’s Streetscene service collected 160 Easter eggs and 32 tubs of chocolate bars, all generously donated by Barnet Council staff.

The awards, which are now in their 17th year, are a chance for the borough to officially recognise the dedication and hard work of those who strive to make a positive difference to people’s lives. Anyone wishing to submit a nomination can do so up until 31 December 2016. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony held in March next year hosted by the Worshipful the Mayor of Barnet, Councillor David Longstaff.

Drop-in sessions on proposed move of East Barnet library

The sessions are part of a consultation process on the proposal to relocate East Barnet library to new premises at the Victoria Recreation Ground in 2019. This consultation is now open will run until 19 December 2016. Library users are encouraged to attend one of the drop-in sessions for more information, and the consultation document and questionnaire can be obtained in printed form at East Barnet library or online.
Barnet Council is a glutton for cleaner streets

As part of the innovative approach to street cleaning, seven bright orange glutton machines will be located in Barnet’s town centres, with an additional machine targeting hotspot areas across Barnet. The machines which are completely electric-powered, are able to vacuum up all types of waste and will be operating in town centres from 11am-7pm daily.
Plans to maintain 14 library sites approved

Proposals which will maintain 14 library sites in Barnet have been given the go ahead by full council. At a meeting of full council on Monday 4 April members voted to approve the proposals which follow public consultation. The changes to the library service will see: • 14 library sites retained, as well as the home, mobile and digital library services • Increased opening hours at 10 sites through the use of new technology to enable a library to open unstaffed, as being trialled at Edgware Library
Barnet praised for resettling Syrian refugees

It follows the publication of new government figures which show that the UK has resettled over 5,500 Syrian refugees under the Vulnerable Persons Resettlement (VPR) scheme putting it on track to meet its commitment of resettling 20,000 by 2020. Barnet has currently resettled 37 Syrian refugees out of its commitment to resettle 50 individuals as part of the VPR scheme. Immigration Minister Robert Goodwill said: “The support of Barnet and other local authorities has been paramount in helping us resettle so many vulnerable people who have fled conflict.

This year, almost 95 per cent of Barnet residents who applied on time received an offer of a place at one of their top three choices of schools, whilst almost 85 per cent were offered a place at their first choice. These figures are very similar to those of the previous year with the same percentage of residents receiving a place at one of their top three school choices and the same percentage being offered their first choice.
