Rev Julie Gittoes, vicar of St Mary’s and Christ Church Hendon, has been appointed Chair of Barnet Council’s newly launched Hendon Community Partnership Board. The council has formed the partnership to bring together representatives of the local community, councillors and council officers to oversee and have input into the multi-million-pound Hendon redevelopment scheme.
Barnet Council services including Planning, Highways and Environmental Health returned to in-house control on Saturday 1 April, following the end of the 10-year joint venture ‘Re’ with outsourcing company Capita. The move sees around 300 Re staff transfer to direct employment with the council.
Barnet Council has become the first local authority to launch the InBest benefits calculator, designed to support residents with the rise in cost of living. The InBest benefits calculator has been integrated into Barnet’s online support application, to make it easier for people who are experiencing financial difficulties to find out what support is available to them.

Barnet Council has launched a new campaign aimed at helping residents to keep their homes healthy and free from damp, mould, and condensation. The council has recognised that dampness is a common problem for residents, which can lead to a range of health hazards, including respiratory problems and asthma.
In the lead up to Earth Day on 22 April 2023, Barnet’s Young Peoples’ Assembly have put together a series of videos to encourage action to help raise awareness and encourage sustainability in Barnet.
Finchley Lido Leisure Centre to be redeveloped on existing site following Council’s decision

Barnet Council has announced the redevelopment of Finchley Lido Leisure Centre will take place on its current site, following a consultation process that garnered over 3,000 responses. While proposals included moving its location, the council listened to the opinions of residents and community groups who favoured keeping it at Great North Leisure Park (GNLP).
Barnet Council has received £300,000 from the Mayor of London’s Green and Resilient Spaces Fund to help its flood resilience project in Watling Park, Burnt Oak. This comes as part of a joint application with Harrow Council, totalling £600,000 awarded to the wider Silk Stream Catchment Parks project.
Barnet’s unsung heroes honoured at 23rd Civic Awards

The annual Barnet Civic Awards ceremony, held at Hendon Town Hall last night (April 25), honoured individuals and organisations that make a significant impact through their voluntary work in the local community. This year awards were given in three categories; ‘Barnet Lifetime Achievement Civic Award’; ‘Barnet Award for Outstanding Service to the Community’ and ‘Barnet Young Citizen of the Year’.
Barnet Council has funded the £56,500 refurbishment of the Fallowfield’s Community Centre in North Finchley, which is due to reopen soon to youth groups and the local community. The community centre which has not been in use since 2008, is ready to be brought back to life thanks to Community Infrastructure Levy* funding, approved by the Council’s East Area Committee.
Mayor of Barnet writes to Mayor of twinned city of Pokhara following tragic plane crash

Following the tragic events in Pokhara, Nepal, the worshipful Mayor of Barnet Cllr Alison Moore has written to the Mayor of the city twinned with Barnet. As a mark of respect, the borough flag flying outside of Hendon Town Hall is flying at half-mast. Dear Mayor, It was a tremendous shock to learn of the tragic air crash in Pokhara on Sunday 15th January.
