Barnet reaches 1,000 lives lost to COVID-19

Last updated:

Deaths due to COVID-19 in Barnet have now reached 1,000, following the passing of another resident today, Friday 7 October. COVID-19 vaccinations are taking place all across the borough and are free to attend. Leader of the Council, Cllr Barry Rawlings, has released a statement of reflection:

Libraries All libraries in the borough will be closed from 10am on Saturday 21 March until further notice. We apologise for any inconvenience, but the safety of our staff and customers is our priority. We have extended the loan time on all the books and CDs you have borrowed for six weeks and removed all fines. Any fines due on DVDs from this time will be waived when they are returned.

If you're out in a park, please follow the government’s guidance on social distancing and stay at least two metres apart from each other.

I have been truly heartened to see how local people have rallied together and are looking out for those around them. As the Prime Minister announced last night, there are new measures in place to limit the spread of infection. For your part, you must now stay at home unless it is to shop for food or medicine, go for outdoor exercise once a day, seek medical attention, or travel to work if absolutely necessary. The police will have powers to disperse groups of people in public.

The hub manages a network of local support, coordinating Barnet Together’s established community groups and volunteers, as well as providing a non-medical urgent care helpline.

Whilst the service is working hard to minimise any disruption, changes are having to be made to blue recycling bin collections so weekly black refuse bin collections can continue during this time. Blue recycling bin collections will occur on the week commencing 30 March, week commencing 13 April and week commencing 27 April. The council will continue to monitor Government updates and review this arrangement in mid-April.

This means that the council will now, temporarily, collect recycling waste on a fortnightly basis We will continue to collect general refuse waste from black bins on a weekly basis. You can find your fortnightly recycling collection dates at barnet.gov.uk/covid19

We’ve set up the Community Help Hub to provide non-medical help and support for people in the borough that are self-isolating or being shielded, and may not otherwise be able to get the things they need.
