The council employs 93 apprentices in its schools, social care services, gardening and grounds work teams, street cleaning and rubbish collection departments, and back office roles. Mr Hooton spoke out during National Apprenticeship Week, an annual campaign to highlight the value that apprentices add to the UK workforce.

Households across Barnet will be asked to take part in Census 2021 this spring. The census, run by the Office for National Statistics, is a once-in-a-decade survey that gives us the most accurate estimate of all the people and households in England and Wales. It has been carried out every ten years since 1801, with the exception of 1941.

Barnet Council’s Licensing Sub-Committee took action to revoke the Red & Black Restaurant & Bar’s alcohol and music licence after the venue was caught hosting a party last month, and because of a string of previous complaints about late night music.

Which is why National Apprenticeship Week (8-14 February) fits so strongly with the ethos of the project, as Barnet Council and its partners continue to invest in young people and skills. Matthew Perrin (pictured), 26, is working on the construction of the new Brent Cross West station, for Barnet Council’s partner VolkerFitzpatrick. He is on his third apprenticeship, having started with a one-year Level 2 NVQ in rail engineering, and now studying for a five-year honours degree in civil engineering at London South Bank University which he combines with his job.

I was particularly sad to read of antisemitic graffiti on a children’s playground in the borough, though I am heartened to see that incidents in the borough overall dropped by a quarter compared to last year.

The Barnet Community Innovation Fund is a new grant scheme designed to help build stronger relationships between Barnet residents, the Voluntary and Community Sector, local NHS services, and Local Authority, to achieve better health and mental wellbeing locally. The fund will do this by supporting innovative ideas from Barnet’s voluntary and community sector on how to work with our diverse communities. It will build on established successful partnerships that have grown during the pandemic.

Work on installing network starts this month (February 2021), with Barnet Council partnering with internet service provider Community Fibre to rollout the gigabit fibre pilot scheme. This will see installation of an alternative network to existing telephone lines, to serve Grahame Park with new faster, affordable, and more reliable internet connections.
