The Barnet Community Response Fund has awarded £50,000 to 28 of Barnet’s local voluntary, community and faith organisations, with grants of up to £2000 each. Set up in partnership with Barnet Together and Barnet Council, the Barnet Community Response Fund enables local organisations to continue providing frontline support to those most in need.

The massacres began on 11 July 1995, when Bosnian Serb forces, led by General Ratko Mladić overran and captured the town of Srebrenica in Eastern Bosnia. It had been declared a UN Safe Area, but in the days following, more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were systematically murdered and buried in mass graves. Srebrenica Memorial Day is now marked each year on 11 July.

The COVID-19 crisis has been devastating for many but seen Barnet at its best with communities pulling together to help those most affected. While lockdown has meant strict social distancing, many local groups and charities have found interesting and novel ways to combat loneliness, provide essential support to those most in need, and to keep the community united.
Barnet Libraries launch new ‘Select and Collect’ service

During the initial phase, residents are now able to pick up and return books and other library items using a new ‘Select and Collect’ service. The service is already available at Barnet’s four Core Plus Libraries: Chipping Barnet, Colindale, Edgware and Finchley Church End. Residents can call, email or go online in advance to select what they would like to borrow.

Barnet rogue landlords and letting agents fined £26,500 after rat and cockroach infestations

Barnet Council’s enforcement officers found that 80 Highfield Avenue, Golders Green, had not been registered as a House of Multiple Occupancy (HMO) – despite being home to nine people. They discovered a faulty fire alarm system, stairs and flooring that had been partially eaten by rats, and a severe cockroach infestation – all breaches of HMO management regulations.
