Contractor fined after damage to protected trees

Kelly Communications Ltd was ordered to pay the fine, £4,398 in costs and £120 victim surcharge after pleading guilty to four offences of contravening Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) during a hearing at Willesden Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 6 December. The prosecution was brought by Barnet Council’s Planning, Trees and Enforcement Team. In March this year workers were digging a service trench for telecommunications cables when they damaged the root networks of two mature Oak trees, a Thorn tree and a Chestnut tree in and around Field Mead, Mill Hill.
The multi-billion pound Brent Cross Cricklewood scheme will create a new town centre, incorporating 7,500 homes, 27,000 jobs, three re-built schools, redevelopment of Brent Cross shopping centre, new parks and community facilities, an additional Thameslink train station as well as major road and public transport improvements.
Barnet invited to sign Book of Condolence

The signing will take place between Thursday 6 October until Wednesday 12 October from 10am-3pm, on weekdays only. The book will be in a private room on the ground floor of Hendon Town Hall. Mr Peres was the ninth President of Israel, as well as a Nobel peace prize laureate, and served from 2007 to 2014. Leader of Barnet Council, Councillor Richard Cornelius, said: “We know many of our residents will want to sign our Book of Condolences for Shimon Peres after his sad passing away on September 28.
Entrepreneurial Barnet competition launched

The Entrepreneurial Barnet Competition, organised by Middlesex University, Barnet Council and Barnet and Southgate College, gives the chance for local entrepreneurs to showcase their ideas to win one of four prizes worth £500 each. The competition runs from 18 January until 19 February with prize money provided by Hammerson, one of the developers of the Brent Cross regeneration scheme.
Volunteering Barnet receives stamp of approval

Volunteering Barnet – the organisation set up in partnership between Groundwork London and Barnet Council to provide a volunteering brokerage service for the borough - is proud to announce that they have officially been awarded the Volunteer Centre Quality Accreditation (VCQA). The accreditation assures the public and others in the charity, faith and voluntary sector that the organisation is providing a high quality volunteering service, according to the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO)*.
New plans for Brent Cross Shopping Centre unveiled

Having revolutionised retail when it opened 40 years ago, the proposed plans to transform the centre form the main element of Brent Cross London, ahead of submitting a detailed planning application. The scheme is part of a larger £4.5bn regeneration plan for Brent Cross and Cricklewood, for which Hammerson and Standard Life Investments already has outline planning consent, granted in 2010.
Barnet Council celebrates National Apprenticeship Week

The Burnt Oak Opportunity Support Team (BOOST) and the National Careers Service will be promoting work and apprenticeship options at Brent Cross Shopping Centre this Friday. This will be one of the main events Barnet Council is hosting this week as it celebrates the achievements of apprentices, as part of National Apprenticeship Week. Apprenticeships are available for anyone over the age of 16. People who are already working can also use an apprenticeship to upskill, for example, when a worker wants to gain promotion to become a manager.
No increase to general Council Tax

However, following consultation, the council will apply a three per cent social care precept to bills in 2018/19. This will be spent exclusively on helping to provide support and take care of elderly and vulnerable adult residents. Barnet has the largest population of any London borough and is home to a higher population of older people compared to the rest of London, many of whom require care. The precept will generate an additional £4.9m per year, adding £2.89 per month to Council Tax bills for a band D property.
Armed Forces Day 2017

The ceremony on Sunday 25 June, will see army reservists, cadets and ex-servicemen and women assemble for the parade at Hendon Town Hall, in The Burroughs. As part of the event, the Worshipful the Mayor of Barnet, Councillor Brian Salinger, will raise an Armed Forces Day flag above the town hall. The annual ceremony is one of many taking place across the country to acknowledge the contribution of both those currently serving in the Armed Forces and those who have served in the past.

The new service allows residents to stream meetings live via the council’s website and listen in as the debate takes place during a selection of meetings. The technology also allows residents to listen to recordings of what was said at the committee and even select which agenda item they would like to hear. A schedule of which meetings will be available to stream is published on the council’s website.
