The North London Councils partnership, which comprises the borough councils of Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey and Islington, was put forward as a finalist in the Local Government Chronicle’s (LGC) 2021 annual awards in the ‘Health & Social Care’ category. It is the only multi-council partnership to be named as a finalist in this year’s awards.

While national league tables have again been suspended this year, it is expected that Barnet students will again perform strongly in their GCSEs. In 2019, the last time there were external examinations, students in the borough ranked second for Progress 8 scores, which gauge the progress made by each student during their time at secondary school, placing them second in the country out of 151 local authorities.

Barnet Council is postponing its Barnet Summertime Festival till summer 2022. The music festival, which was to be the culmination of a summer of events in the borough including a popular outdoor cinema in Victoria park in Finchley, and a series of community carnivals and pop-up events in various town centres, has been put back until next year due to a number of factors. Ticket holders will be contacted with the option to keep hold of their tickets for next year's festival, or to have their money refunded.

New facilities will include tennis courts, 3G artificial turf pitches, a high ropes course, bowling green, multi-use games area, outdoor gym, play area, skate park and more. There will be a Hub building with a café, indoor climbing, activity studio, nursery, soft play, community rooms, changing rooms and toilets.

Better is the only leisure operator in the country to be involved in the initiative and joins a number of leading businesses across different sectors such as Asda, National Express and Uber, to have pledged their support for the UK’s vaccination programme, by offering incentives to vaccinated customers.

We’re beyond proud to have facilitated a striking, colourful community mural with the support of Brent Cross Shopping Centre, Pines and Needles, and most importantly the students and art department of Whitefield Secondary School and Sixth Form.

The consultation, which runs until Thursday 28 October, will gather views on proposals to renew an additional licensing scheme for houses in multiple occupation (HMOs), along with the introduction of new selective licensing schemes to regulate other privately rented properties. The aim is to improve and maintain the condition and management of private rented accommodation for the benefit of tenants, landlords and residents in general, and to reduce deprivation, anti-social behaviour and crime associated with the private rented sector.

Barnet Council is standing with other local authorities to provide accommodation for refugees fleeing the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. Cllr Dan Thomas, Leader of Barnet Council, has announced:

Children who have been in care are often very vulnerable, with many experiencing problems such as homelessness, addiction, criminality and teenage pregnancy. The pandemic has exacerbated things further, with many care experienced young people suffering from depression, anxiety, social isolation and reduced job prospects.
