Barnet Council to mark International Women’s Day with launch of anti-violence strategy

Barnet Council is to mark International Women’s Day (Tuesday 8 March) with the launch of its new Domestic Abuse (DA) and Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) strategy. The council’s three-year DA and VAWG strategy takes a zero-tolerance approach to abuse and violence against women and girls in Barnet. It builds on the council’s first VAWG strategy, which was initiated in 2017.
Barnet’s business community is being offered a free support service, as part of a package of council measures to help local employers bounce back from the economic hit caused by the pandemic lockdowns.

A statement from the Mayor Following the outbreak of war in Ukraine, the Mayor of Barnet has thanked the residents and faith and community groups who have already done so much to help those affected and highlighted some of the initiatives currently underway in the borough. Mayor of Barnet Cllr Alison Cornelius said:
Councillor Reuben Thompstone, Chairman of the Community Leadership and Libraries Committee, said: “Dr Shah was a well-known figure in our borough whose work touched many of our lives. As Chair of the Jain Network Dr Shah worked tirelessly to represent the Jain faith and promote its values, both here in Barnet and across the world. He was also a strong advocate of inter faith understanding, and a longstanding member of the Barnet Multi Faith Forum executive committee.
At an extraordinary meeting of the council on 1 March 2022 it was agreed that Cllr John Marshall be awarded the Honorary Freedom of the Borough which The Worshipful Mayor of Barnet, Cllr Alison Cornelius, presented to him on behalf of the Council. It is the highest award that can be bestowed in the Borough of Barnet and was awarded in recognition of the dedication to public service by John Marshall to residents over four decades.
The 11-foot bronze Grade II listed ‘Peace’ statue – which stands on top of 200 tonnes of Devon granite – was first installed in the beauty spot in March 1911. It had been donated by wealthy benefactor Sydney Simmons, who paid for the purchase of the Friary Estate, on the condition that it forever remain a public park.
Extremely hot weather is expected to develop on Sunday and peak on Monday and Tuesday (18 & 19 July). A red extreme heat warning has been issued by the Met Office, meaning temperatures could hit 40C (104F). The heat can affect anyone, but some people run a greater risk of serious harm. Remember to think of those who may be more at risk from the effects of heat, including older people, babies and young children, and people with underlying health conditions.
Barnet Councillors vote to end the ‘easy-council’ mass-outsourcing of services by 2026

Barnet’s Labour Councillors last night (Tuesday 19 April) voted to end one of the council’s long-standing outsourcing contracts with Capita (Regional Enterprise) at the Policy and Resources committee meeting held in Hendon Town Hall.
During the pandemic we saw a rise in residents wanting to access more services online with 70% of residents choosing to use online tools to resolve their queries rather than call. This resulted in council services having to consider how we can support all residents better remotely and inclusively.
Barnet Council starts work on 217 new affordable homes

The affordable homes scheme at the Upper and Lower Fosters estate was co-designed with residents, neighbours and local community organisations to decide what to build, where and how.
