What the law says about attendance in school All children must be in education from the school term after their fifth birthday. This is usually at a school, though parents can also decide to educate their children at home. Compulsory education ends on the last Friday in June of Year 11, children are then expected to be in further education or training unless they're in employment.

Most Barnet schools follow the same school term and holiday dates. University Technology Colleges (UTCs) or Studio Schools are types of schools that admit pupils at the beginning of Year 10.  These schools offer education and training which can lead to useful qualifications and progression to further learning, apprenticeship or employment.

If your child was born between 1 September 2013 and 31 August 2014, you will need to apply for their transfer to secondary school in September in 2025.
