Volunteer for the Grit my Street initiative

Winter is coming and Barnet Council is calling on residents and schools to help make their neighbourhoods safer by taking part in this year’s Grit my Street scheme. Barnet Council, working in partnership with Re*, will be gritting priority routes throughout the winter period and, if necessary, residents will be able to work together and help grit roads not included on its priority list. Residents can find the priority gritting routes online

The event also provided shoppers with general health advice from doctors, diabetes specialists and dieticians. Shoppers identified at risk were offered a diabetes test, where 23 people were shown to have Type 2 diabetes and a further 20 individuals found out that they were pre-diabetic, and at significant risk of developing the disease.

New library service for New Barnet in 2019

The decision, taken at Policy and Resources Committee last night (10 January), will see a new, modern, fit for purpose New Barnet Library located at the Victoria Recreation Ground. Residents were consulted on the re-provision and relocation of the new library from October to December 2016. Subject to planning, the New Barnet Library will replace the current East Barnet library, which is set to become a smaller Partnership library, run by Inclusion Barnet, from April 2017.

Preferred partners chosen to run four libraries

Barnet Council is pleased to announce it has selected three preferred partners to run its four new partnership libraries. The partnership libraries, which will be set up by the groups in close collaboration with the council, will launch across the borough from 1 April 2017.

Pupils celebrate GCSE exam success

This year sees the introduction of a new nation-wide system for measuring students’ attainment in English and Maths (using a points scale of 9-1) and the second year of the implementation of ‘Attainment 8’, which measures the achievement of a pupil across eight qualifications including English and Mathematics. Over the next few years, GCSEs in England are being reformed and will be graded with a new scale from 9 to 1, with 9 being the highest grade.

Export Hub gives businesses a boost in Barnet

The Export Hub Roadshow arrives in Barnet on 1 April 2016 as part of the UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) Exporting is GREAT nationwide tour. The Export Hub aims to help businesses succeed in international markets and demonstrate the world of opportunities that exists overseas. The event will give businesses the chance to meet and hear from some of the capital’s most respected business figures and local exporters on how they can take their business abroad.

New state-of-the-art Youth Zone

The £6million facility, which is being developed by charity OnSide alongside Barnet Council, will offer a wide range of activities for young people aged between eight and 19 and up to 25 for those with additional needs. Facilities at the Youth Zone, which will be located on part of Montrose Playing Fields in Colindale, will include dance, sport, art, music, drama, media, employability and mentoring programmes.

Blue badge cheats convicted

Mohammed Mohammed, 20, of Westferry Road, Isle of Dogs, and Berkan Birol, 22, of Commerce Road, Wood Green, were each fined £400, ordered to pay £140 costs and a £40 victim surcharge after pleading guilty at Willesden Magistrates’ Court on 5 July to wrongfully using a disabled persons badge. The court heard that Mohammed was caught by an officer from the council’s Corporate Anti-Fraud Team (CAFT) who was carrying out checks on blue badges being displayed in cars parked in streets in Hendon in December last year.

Resident satisfaction remains high

The survey also shows 70 per cent of people living in the borough remain satisfied with the way the council runs things - maintaining the satisfaction ratings recorded in autumn 2016 and seven per cent higher than the London average. When it comes to the environment, almost three quarters of those surveyed felt the council was doing well in keeping their neighbourhood clean and green, and were positive about the council’s neighbourhood services such as street cleaning, parks and open spaces, street lighting and waste collection services.

Handley Page crash airmen honoured

Pilot Cpt Vernon Earl George Busby, Mr Bertram G. Cooper, Mr R.P. Cooper, Mr W.H. Hathaway, Mr J.W. Windebank all sadly lost their lives when the Handley Page V/1500, B9463, came down shortly after taking off from Cricklewood Aerodrome on 8 June 1918. It was the aircraft’s 13th flight. It crashed in front of 21 Garrick Avenue, leaving only one survivor – Colonel Ogilvie, a passenger in the tail gunner position.
